Royal Ming Dynasty Imperial Blue-and-White ‘Peony Scroll' Porcelain Vase, YuHuChunPing

The elegantly potted pear-shaped body is decorated in rich inky-blue tones with four peony blossoms alternately shown in profile and full face and budding flowers borne on scrolling, leafy stems, all between the cloud collar on the shoulder and lotus lappets containing ruyi-head pendants. The neck is further decorated with upright plantain leaves above bands of overlapping waves.

YuHuChunPing is one of the popular vase styles of the Ming Dynasty. This Hongwu YuHuChunPing has a distinctive hierarchy of decoration, a sparse layout, a subdued blue color, and stagnant black spots where the blue material is gathered. Compared with similar vessels of the Yongle and Xuande periods of the later Ming Dynasty, the shape of the vase has a larger flared mouth, almost like a folded rim, a slightly thicker and longer neck, and a lower center of gravity on the abdomen, so it appears thick and stable.

Yuhuchun first appeared in the temples of the Tang dynasty (608–917 AD) as a holy water vase. By the Song dynasty (960-1279) the form had become a popular type of wine vessel. During the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) the shape became more refined as well as being decorated with both underglaze blue and red. This tradition continued into the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and into the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). Today they are often referred to as "Pear Shaped vases". During the Yuan and Ming dynasties the form was further adapted by the addition of handles and spouts for wine.
