Rare Chinese Porcelain 'Cong' Vase
The cong (琮) shape, originally crafted from jade during the Neolithic period, is one of the most iconic forms in Chinese art. With its square exterior and hollow circular center, the cong symbolizes the ancient Chinese cosmological belief: the square represents the earth, and the circle symbolizes heaven.
From Jade to Porcelain
The cong shape was first used in jade artifacts, particularly in the Liangzhu(3400-2250 BC) and Longshan cultures, and was often associated with ritualistic purposes. Over time, artisans began creating cong-shaped porcelain pieces, especially during the Qing Dynasty. These porcelain versions, while less rare than jade, became highly valued for their connection to ancient traditions and their striking geometric form.
Cong-shaped porcelain vases are known for their clean lines and elegant proportions. Artisans carefully crafted these pieces to reflect the same balance and symmetry of ancient jade cong objects, often using subtle glazes to highlight their beauty.
Today, cong-shaped porcelain remains a sought-after design for collectors. Modern replicas, often made using traditional techniques, capture the ancient elegance of the cong shape while offering a contemporary take on this historical form.
